Introduction to printmaking workshops 2023

Printshare are delighted to be back for a third workshop series, in our brand new Printshare Studio!

2023 offers 5 workshops in different printmaking techniques, taught by members of our collaborative group in a friendly relaxed environment. These workshops are suitable for beginners, or those wanting to try their hand at a new printmaking technique. You can choose to do a single or multiple workshops, or the whole course.

These workshops will support us to develop the new studio space, and an exciting programme of more workshops and arts activities in Ulverst

___

Linocut with Claudia Long

Saturday 13th May 10am - 4pm

Linocut is a relief printmaking technique where a design is cut into a linoleum surface with sharp knives, chisels and gouges. You’ll have the opportunity to create and transfer a design, cut and ink your plate to create a series of prints. You can also experiment with Chine Collé, learning how to use fine papers to bring colour and texture into your prints.

Paper Lithography with Anna Litchfield

Saturday 20th May 10am - 4pm

Paper Lithography is an interesting way to make monoprints using paper as a plate and Gum Arabic as a resist. It’s based on lithographic techniques and uses high contrast photocopies or drawings in oil based inks to create unique prints. You can use your own drawings, photographs, or copies of images from papers and magazines can be collaged to create interesting prints– a modern take on a traditional technique.

Monoprint with Marett Troostwyck

Saturday 27th May 10am - 4pm

Monoprinting is a lovely painterly technique that creates unique prints. It’s a good way to create prints expressively and spontaneously. You’ll have the opportunity to experiment with imagery, mark making, colour, tone and texture using a variety of methods and materials including natural and manufactured textured materials and the use of stencils.

Collagraph with Clare Dent

Saturday 3rd & Saturday 10th June 10am - 1pm

Collagraph is a textural printmaking technique where collaged materials are applied to a cardboard plate. The plate is then sealed with varnish and allowed to dry. Participants will experiment with everyday materials, textures and colours to create at least one plate during the first class. During the second class you will learn how to ink and wipe the plate and soak paper to create a series of interesting and detailed prints.

Drypoint with Victoria Peake

Saturday 17th June 10am - 4pm

Drypoint is an intaglio printmaking technique, where lines are incised into a plate creating a burr that captures the ink to make a soft velvety line. Colour can be added directly to the plate (a la poupée), by overprinting and layering, or hand colouring once dry. Using clear drypoint plastic, you’ll experiment with mark making, using a range of tools and techniques and learn how to prepare a plate, transfer an image, soak paper and ink and wipe your plate to create a unique series of prints.
